The South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation was chartered by five private citizens in 1985 to support wildlife enhancement and park development activities for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. The Foundation's mission is to solicit and encourage support to preserve and protect South Dakota's natural resources, its outdoor heritage and provide expanded recreation and education opportunities.
The Foundation is an independent, nongovernmental, nonprofit, public501(c)(3)organization working in partnership with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks to accomplish its mission. The Foundation is governed by a board of directors comprised of up to 15 regular members and two non-voting, ex-officio members, the Secretary of the Department of Game, Fish, and Parks and a designated representative from the Game Fish and Parks Commission.
The IRS provides federal oversight for all charitable organizations. It has specific expectations for Foundation governance, asset distribution, financial management, and other aspects of nonprofit administration. The South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation adheres to all federal and state regulations pertaining to nonprofit corporations. The Foundation also conducts an annual financial examination through an independent auditor and it adheres to the Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
All nonprofits are required to file an annual, informational tax return. The South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation files its Form 990 with the IRS before November 15th each year.
